Postcards from Europe: Unhelpful assumptions

Day 3: Unhelpful assumptions

After a lovely morning in Nuremberg tasting Lebekuchen and Pretzels we travelled onto Vienna.  (Another 326 miles).  My wonderfully cunning plan to pop to the supermarket conveniently located 2 minutes from our apartment to buy food for dinner was thwarted by the fact that it shut at 5:30pm (just a few minutes before we arrived) and wasn’t opening until the morning we leave. Eek!

Tired and hungry is already a theme of the pinch points on this trip. How often is this true in other situations?  How often do we attribute difficult moments to all sorts of agendas when actually it’s often that our resources are depleted?

So I’m reminded that living in a 24/7 supermarket culture isn’t everyone’s experience of the world, even in other cities! I’d just assumed it was the same everywhere and forgotten the small, but significant differences.  It made it all a bit stressful in the moment as my expectations were different to reality!  I’m sure there’s a life lesson in this beyond supermarkets – perhaps about how we assume other people’s experiences of the world are the same as ours and forget to check?

My reflection for today is when else am I making assumptions without checking the full picture?

PS Everyone did get fed – we just had to walk much further to a VERY busy train station express shop.  It was stressful and not the most fun part of our trip so far, but once everyone was fed, the fluffy blankets were out and we were cuddled up watching Mufasa calm was restored.
